The Importance of Benchmarking Your Data

Where to start when trying to “move the needle”

Whenever I talk to a client about their data one thing that seems prevalent is the idea that their data is this vast expansive space where they could come up with numerous possibilities and conclusions. While that is partly true, one main point I try to drive home is that they have built a product, so they have not only defined their ideal user journey through the process of building, but defined the edges of the data we can gather based on those pre-defined parameters. That is to say, when looking for a great Data and Analytics Strategy or finding that ever elusive “a ha” moment, we are not mining in a vast expansive space filled with endless possibilities, but rather going into a single mine, which we built with a specific use case in mind, to try to discern whether or not there is gold.

First and foremost great data and analytics strategy is like a movie, we have already defined our characters and have a loose idea of our story when we are thinking about data in relation to the product. Aside from whatever persona work your company has done, from a data perspective we have already defined a sign up flow and its subsequent user paths within the product. Imagine it like a maze, we have not only constructed it, but defined all of the possible paths a person can take…
